Saint Joan of Arc (1412-1431) was born a peasant girl in eastern France. At the age of twelve, she experienced several divine visions and voices. At the age of sixteen, her voices led her to petition the king for the command of an army to fight the English. Miraculously, the king granted Joan an army. Joan went on to defeat the English and become a French heroine. She was later captured by the English and burned at the stake for being a witch.
