The clock set from the magazine was originally designed to receive and decode the 60kHz JJY radio clock signal from Japan. However, it is almost impossible to receive the signal indoor in Taiwan, so we changed the control module with the one we designed. It uses the Low Energy Bluetooth Smart to connect to an iPhone and performs the time synchronization.

This APP sends the time synchronization commands to the Clock. The synchronization service remains on even the APP is running in the background. We also added the feature of time zone configuration so the Clock is able to display time from another time zone with the same accuracy. Besides the time, we can use the same APP to control the display of the Clock. For example, we can use it as the game scoreboard.

Time on Smartphones get synchronized through the carrier network or by the Network Time Protocol from Internet. Using Bluetooth Smart to send the time synchronization commands makes the Radio Clock gets time synchronized under the environment that lacks of broadcasting time signal on the air.
