Place alarm uses an IOS function that activates Place Alarm when a "significant location change" has occurred. This is basically when the iPhone needs to change gsm cell tower.
When Place Alarm has been activated, depending on your settings, it starts to track your exact location for a certain amount of minutes and then "goes to sleep" until a next "significant location change occurs". In most cases Place Alarm only needs to track your movements for 10-20 minutes and still be able to trigger alarms at your set locations.
