Ko Horomatangi te Taniwha Rangatira or Horomatangi the Chiefly Taniwha is a story from Ngāti Tūwharetoa, of the Taupō District in Aotearoa (New Zealand).

Horomatangi is a well-­‐known taniwha who resides in Lake Taupō. Taniwha are legendary creatures that live in deep pools or rivers, some are highly regarded as kaitiaki or guardians, whilst others were dangerous predators.

This story has been narrated in both Te Reo Māori and English and is aimed at Pia or emergent learners of Te Reo Māori. Brought to you by Ngāti Tūwharetoa and the Tūwharetoa Cultural Knowledge Project. Have fun, read along and even learn a song about Horomatangi the Chiefly Taniwha.
