To Mitsuaki Iwago

Our boat on the Alaskan ocean was suddenly surrounded in bubbles, and I suddenly realized it was whales bubble-net feeding. When a whale moved to avoid the boat, I had a film-loaded camera in my right hand, which I aimed at the whale, avoiding the sea spray as it surged upwards. The exposure and focus were just right, and the light was beautiful. This would make for a dramatic transparency. This was the story I heard when I met him. This is what happened in one moment of someone called a genius. He hadn't just gone there - the drama had drawn him there. It was the only conceivable explanation.
Moreover, his attachment freely turns him into the subject of his photos - a monkey when shooting monkeys, a lion when shooting lions. It probably took tens of thousands of years for leaf beetles and stick insects on trees to blend in against their backgrounds, but the strength of his gaze from the other side of the camera takes no time to blend him in with the target of his next shot.

It has been quite some time since I first saw Mitsuaki Iwago's name on a feature on the Serengeti in National Geographic's May 1986 edition. I still remember the excitement as that new volume arrived. I went over the structure of photos in those days anew. The still shots made me excited - they had traces of careful observation, and concealed a premonition anticipating the next bit of drama. The journalistic value of shots only obtainable on location is a given, but these pictures were made out to be more beautiful than that. Joy and misery directly communicated via glossy nature photos gave a reconfirmation that man and animal are part of the same universe.
