The Gwangju Biennale
The Gwangju Biennale was founded in 1995 as a biennial, international contemporary arts exhibition to honor and pay tribute to the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Struggle. The Biennale aims to express the democratic spirit of the people of Gwangju through cultural exchange on an international level, provide a central voice for Asian contemporary art, and a cultural axis between East and West.

10,000 Lives, the 8th Gwangju Biennale presents a sprawling investigation of the relationships that bind people to images and images to people. With works by 134 artists realized between 1901 and 2010, as well as several new commissions the exhibition is configured as a temporary museum that brings together artworks and cultural artifacts to examine our obsession with images.
