Come discover Washington, D.C. and its architecture.

Based upon the fourth edition of the Guide to the Architecture of Washington, D.C., this lively and informative app guide offers tourists, residents and architecture aficionados insight into nearly 400 of Washington’s most important architectural landmarks. Organized into 19 discrete tours with maps, the book includes notable new structures such as the National Museum of the American Indian, as well as classics that epitomize the city. Every entry is accompanied by a photograph and includes the structure’s location, the names of the architects and designers responsible for the building and any major alterations, and the corresponding dates of completion. This app guide is arranged geographically so that the user, whether by foot or by car, will experience the architecture of a particular area as conveniently as possible.

This app guide is not intended to serve as a purely factual historical record; much of the content, in fact, is utterly subjective and may take the form of positive or negative criticism. The user of the app should remember that the opinions expressed herein are just that - opinions - and are solely those of the author and AIA DC. Reasonable good people may disagree as to whether a given work of architecture is good, bad, gorgeous, or hideous -- a negative comment about a particular building is not intended to give offense to the architects or any others involved in its creation.

Praise for the content:

“Brings powerful evidence of the continuing evolution of Washington’s streetscape”---the Washington Post

This handsomely illustrated guide covers not only the monuments of the Mall, but also the diplomatic chateaux lining Massachusetts Avenue NW; the churches, parks and other monumental architecture that climb up Meridian Hill; and the ‘brutalism on a grand scale’ that characterizes the FBI building and other bureaucratic monstrosities.”--- the Washington Times

Unlike the printed guide, this app guide provides detailed directions using Google maps.

This app guide was developed by the Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Founded in 1887, the Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Architects serves the Nation’s Capital, functioning as both the ‘local’ and ‘state’ component of the AIA for the District of Columbia. The Chapter and its members have been intimately involved in the design and planning of Washington and continue to play an active role in the city’s development today.
